Travellers Series Round 8 - Datchet Water - Results

It was not only 11 skippers that joined the race team at Datchet on Saturday, some early rain and a lot of wind came out to play also.  The 2018 series seems to have been sailed mostly in light conditions, but it ended with a bang.

After a rain delayed start the skippers and their boats headed down to the course that had been set by Hugh McAdoo and Les Thorne in the rescue boat.  I say down to the course, and yes, it was down, way down.  The long hot summer means that the water level in the reservoir is very low and, because of this, we were given permission to sail from the waters edge rather than up at the top.
The PRO Terry Rensch and his shoreside assistant Peter Haskell got proceedings underway with the obligatory briefing.

The early races were mostly sailed using various forms of A rig with Nigel Brown coming out of the blocks with a blinding start to the event, taking bullets in the first 4 races before allowing Mike Kemp and Toby Laux to get a sniff, but finishing the morning with a 5th win.  Racing down the fleet was a close affair with many a tussle, but also a few boat and rig failures taking some people off the water.

After Lunch a further 6 races were completed, but by this time the wind had increased significantly taking people through their B rigs and onto very small C’s.  Winners of the afternoon races we mostly decided through survival of the gusts with us all suffering a lot of nosediving, even in the dinky C rigs.

Nigel managed to finish the day with 2 more wins but not before Toby Laux, Wayne Stobbs and Paul Davis managed to keep him at bay for the first 4 afternoon races.

The consistent but gusty wind meant that no course changes were needed during the day but the rescue boat was used a lot to recover boats that had succumbed to the conditions.  The last race saw only 6 of the 11 attendees take to the water, and Toby suffered a failure leaving only 5 finishers.  There will be a lot of rig rebuilding going on over the off-season

Nigel Brown was the convincing winner with 19 points, followed by Toby Laux on 31 and Wayne Stobbs on 33.

Huge thanks to Datchet Water Radio Sailing Club and the race team led by Terry.
