First Open Event of the Year

Loading the car in a snow shower didn’t seem like the best of starts to the first RG65 open of the year but in the end the weather held off and the sun came out for 17 skippers who took part at Watermead MBC  https://watermeadmodelboatclub.wordpress.com/ on the 21st Feb.

With a cold westerly wind blowing off shore, the breeze could be fluky at times but was mostly at the top end of A rig conditions. This was ideal for the Dragon Force 65s with good showings in the overall standings. A number of the RG65s went down to B rigs for a few races before the break for lunch, with things getting lighter later in the afternoon with a few nail biting finishes as people ran into some big shifts and holes near the line.

There was a good mix of boats and people with travelers from the Midlands, especially Two Islands and Abington and some up from the south coast. Designs ranged from two SailsEtc Argons to both composite and wooden Goths as well as the beautifully built Pumas and Jif65 from Abington.

The sailing was good natured will all incidents being settled on the water. With the close racing mid fleet a penalty turn could really ruin your race. 19 races were completed in all with 3 discards. Noel Donaldson and Phil Holiday spent the day trading places at the top of the fleet with Noel finally coming out on top. Clive Cokayne and Peter Dunnett were the top two Dragon Force 65s coming 3rd and 4th overall. Full results are attached.

Big thanks to all the race team from Watermead MBC for providing a warm welcome and putting up with the cold and the mud. The RG65s will be back there for another open in April and the Nationals in June.

The next open event is at on Sunday 29th March at Bournville MYPBC http://www.bournville-mypb-club.org.uk/
