Bournville Open 29th March

Eight sailors braved the wind and the rain to sail at the second RG65 open at Bournville. With the conditions and the small fleet the RG65s were held back and a full fleet of Dragons were on the water.

Bournville supplied the usual challenges with boats becalmed at the top gate while other were laid on their beam ends at the bottom mark. The day became a war of attrition as the casualties started to mount up, there were several rig and radio failures, one swamped boat and a cracked hull from an unplanned excursion into the bank. Phil Griffen was particularly unlucky after his jib clew blew out a few feet short of the line, turning a 3rd into an DNF.

After a hectic morning, two more races were held after lunch with the four remaining boats before proceedings were called to a halt with the forecast predicting worse to come. Mark Dicks and John Burgoine managed to master the conditions to finish 1st and 2nd with Phil Griffen recovering to finish third.

A big thanks goes to the race team, Robin Webb and John Humphries who stoically  put up with the conditions and damp results sheets.

The next RG65 open is on 25th April at Watermead.
