Twenty nine sailors braved the conditions for the 2014 UK combined RG65 and Dragon Force National Championships over the weekend of the 7th/8th of June at Weecher reservoir in Yorkshire. The weather varied from mist and torrential rain on Sunday to bright sunshine on Sunday with the wind going from very light in the mist to top of B rig in the sunshine.

Close racing between Augustin (77) and John (51)

At the head of the fleet Augustin Moreno (sailing an Argon) traded places with John Tushingham (with a Pocket Rocket) with only two points separating them after two days of racing and a very intense final race that saw the two boats separated by inches at times. Augustin finally came out on top to become the RG65 UK Champion for the third time. The top five were rounded out by Mark Dicks (with his new ultra narrow Sliver), Toby Laux (Slim 65) and Cliff Thiel (Ice). Phil Phayle was the top placed Dragon Force 65 but unfortunately his boat was found  be outside the DF65 One Design rules and Buzz Coleman from Coalhouse Fort was declared Dragon Force National Champion.

The fresh conditions saw the leading Dragon Force skippers keeping themselves in contention with the composite boats, with only a couple of light wind races in the mist on Sunday allowing some of the lighter displacement boats to get ahead of them. The continued breezy conditions, as well as allowing some close racing, took their toll on the boats, exposing any weaknesses in hulls and rigs. Several of the leading sailors had to work their way back up though the B fleet over the weekend after running repairs. Fortunately Mike Weston was on hand with a van full of spares to ensure that most boats were able to get back on the water.

The race team put in a sterling effort, having to deal with 180 degree wind shifts on Saturday, as well as mist that made seeing the windward marks difficult at times. Sunday saw conditions settle down a with a consistent breeze that allowed a largely unchanged course all day.

The shore team lead by Liz Tushingham were on hand all weekend to warm up damp sailors with hot drinks and some shelter from the worst of the conditions in the clubhouse as well as providing excellent lunches (including cake) on both days. On Saturday night most entrants enjoyed a group meal over the moor in Ilkley after drying themselves out.

Overall a great time was had by all so thanks to all of those who participated and all of those whose hard work made an enjoyable weekend possible….until next time!
